Smoke fired vessel

£49.00

Hand-thrown on my wheel using a heavily-grogged clay that will withstand erratic heat changes, this piece has then been scraped at  and shaped by hand  on the lower half to leave a  tactile texture. The exterior surface has been left with the makers marks given a textured surface.

After a first firing in my kiln, to 915C, it  was then placed in a fire of local drift-wood and seaweed, where the alchemy that is smoke firing produced the remarkable coloration and pattern that you can see in the photographs.

Once cool, the ash was removed and beeswax applied to give a final depth to the surface.

This vessel sits  comfortably as a sculptural piece in its own right, and will also happily take dried arrangements.

Due to the firing methods, it is not water tight.

This piece is 19cm high and 12cm diameter at its widest point.
